Algeria Reaffirms Commitment to Refugee Support

Geneva, Switzerland – Algeria has renewed its commitment to supporting refugees, emphasizing the principles of international solidarity and burden-sharing at a recent international forum. The commitment was underscored during a meeting focused on reviewing progress in implementing pledges made at the Global Refugee Forum.

Lounas Magramane, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led the Algerian delegation to the meeting held in Geneva from December 15th to 17th, 2025. During his address, Magramane highlighted Algeria’s unwavering adherence to the principles of international solidarity and the shared responsibility in addressing the global refugee crisis. He noted that this commitment comes at a time of increasing humanitarian crises and a significant rise in the number of forcibly displaced people, coupled with declining resources for humanitarian work.

Algeria has been hosting Sahrawi refugees for over 50 years, providing essential support and assistance in coordination with the UNHCR and other UN agencies and partner organizations. This long-standing commitment reflects Algeria’s humanitarian principles and dedication to ensuring the dignity of refugees, providing essential services while working towards a just and lasting solution that allows for their voluntary and dignified return to their homeland.

Magramane stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of forced displacement, particularly conflicts and occupation. He advocated for a comprehensive and balanced approach that combines humanitarian assistance, protection, and sustainable solutions. He further emphasized the international community’s legal and moral responsibility in addressing refugee situations resulting from unresolved conflicts or occupation, especially concerning the Sahrawi refugees, within the framework of international law.

The Algerian delegation also highlighted the progress made in implementing the pledges made at the 2023 Global Refugee Forum, particularly in the areas of health, education, and basic services for refugees hosted within Algeria. Algeria continues to uphold its commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment for refugees while advocating for lasting solutions to displacement crises on the international stage.
