Algiers, Algeria – A new subsea cable is set to significantly enhance internet speeds across Algeria, according to an announcement made by the Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Mr. Sid Ali Zerrouki. The project, a strategic move to bolster the nation’s digital infrastructure, will soon commence, with the foundation stone expected to be laid within the coming days.
Speaking at a forum in Algiers, Minister Zerrouki highlighted the current capacity of Algeria’s internet network, stating it stands at 10.2 terabytes. This, he asserted, positions the country favorably in terms of internet speed and quality. The new cable aims to further improve this standing, ensuring a more robust and reliable online experience for Algerian citizens and businesses.
The Minister also revealed the growing adoption of fiber optic technology, noting that the number of subscribers has reached 2.9 million, with projections indicating a rise to 3 million in the coming weeks. The goal is to extend fiber optic connectivity across the entire national territory by 2027.
Algeria’s fiber optic network extends to the borders of both Mauritania and Niger, underscoring the country’s commitment to regional connectivity. Mr. Zerrouki emphasized Algeria’s role in safeguarding African data through the “Algiers Declaration” on fair, safe, and responsible digital platforms in Africa, which was recently ratified in Algiers.
Furthermore, the official launch of 5G mobile technology was addressed, with Minister Zerrouki confirming its initial rollout earlier this month in select regions. Gradual expansion of 5G coverage to the remaining provinces is planned.
In the realm of electronic payments, the Minister disclosed that approximately 150 million transactions were conducted using the “Golden Card” in 2025. Plans are also underway to introduce new digital applications, including “Cash Las,” designed to support economic operators and merchants.
