Nigeria Seals Major Deal for Italian Fighter Jets

Nigeria has finalized a significant arms deal with Italy for the acquisition of 24 M-346 FI fighter jets, manufactured by Italian aerospace and defense giant Leonardo. The agreement, valued at approximately 1.2 billion euros, includes comprehensive maintenance and long-term support contracts.

This acquisition is a key component of Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to modernize its Air Force and bolster its operational capabilities. Deliveries are expected to commence in early 2025, with an initial batch of three aircraft. The complete fleet is slated to be delivered by mid-2026.

The Nigerian government had previously approved a borrowing plan of $618 million for the purchase of six attack aircraft of the same type, along with associated munitions. In addition to these fighters, Abuja is actively working to enhance its capabilities through the procurement of helicopters and support systems, aiming to restructure its Air Force to effectively address escalating security challenges.

The timing of this deal coincides with persistent and complex internal challenges, including the armed insurgency in the northeast, the proliferation of armed banditry in the northwest, and communal conflicts in the Middle Belt region. These challenges have strained state resources, led to widespread displacement, and negatively impacted investor confidence.

Security analysts suggest that the introduction of advanced fighter jets with enhanced combat and reconnaissance capabilities will provide Nigeria with additional tools to counter these threats, strengthening its ability to conduct precision strikes against armed groups. Nigeria’s choice of an Italian partner in the arms sector signals a shift in its defense strategy, moving away from traditional reliance on the United States, Russia, or China. Italian companies offer modern equipment at relatively lower prices, while providing maintenance services and technology transfer, granting Abuja greater flexibility in managing its military capabilities.
