Algeria Leads Africa’s Anti-Terrorism Fight Through Development

Algeria is at the forefront of Africa’s efforts to combat terrorism, employing a comprehensive approach that combines development initiatives with robust security strategies. This was highlighted during the recent consultative meeting of experts on the African Strategic Plan of Action on Combating Terrorism, held in Algiers.

Professor Hussein Kadri, a specialist in political science and international relations, emphasized Algeria’s pivotal role in fostering African peace and security. He noted that the gathering of African security and research experts in Algiers signifies a clear recognition of Algeria’s experience and expertise in counter-terrorism. African nations trust Algeria to assist them in tackling this menace, viewing it as a key element in building African unity and promoting joint action.

Speaking on Algerian International Radio, Professor Kadri underscored the significant trust placed in Algeria by African nations and counter-terrorism specialists. He stated that the Algerian approach has consistently garnered praise both within Africa and internationally.

Professor Kadri stressed the importance of this initiative, particularly given the socio-economic challenges facing the African continent and the detrimental impact of terrorist activities. He also highlighted the African Union’s recommendations for collaborative efforts to combat terrorism and the need to leverage the experiences of countries like Algeria, particularly its developmental approach, which has been commended by the African Union.

According to Professor Kadri, Algeria’s approach in Africa centers on development and addressing African issues through dialogue, stemming from its own experiences. This contrasts with some other nations that have struggled to overcome crises by relying solely on security solutions. He added that Algeria has dedicated significant resources to African development to create an appealing environment for young people, discouraging them from joining terrorist groups.

During the consultative meeting, Algeria presented practical and realistic solutions that integrate development and strategic security aspects. These solutions emphasize the importance of collective efforts among nations, considering the region’s complex nature and the intricate nature of terrorism, which no single nation can effectively combat alone.

Professor Kadri reaffirmed the significance of the meeting, which reflects the continent’s confidence in Algeria’s role and its position as a central player in shaping the African vision for collective security. Algeria’s membership in key organizations further strengthens its ability to contribute to regional stability. This multifaceted approach underscores Algeria’s commitment to a secure and prosperous Africa.
