Algerian Olympic Committee Denies Luanda Games Accommodation Claims

Algiers – The Algerian Olympic and Sports Committee (COA) has refuted claims circulating online regarding the accommodation and catering arrangements for the Algerian delegation at the ongoing African Youth Games in Luanda, Angola.

The Committee moved swiftly to address what it described as malicious attempts to tarnish Algeria’s image. Social media posts alleged deficiencies in the living conditions and food provided to the Algerian athletes competing in the continental event.

In an official statement, the COA clarified that a photograph circulating online, accompanied by inaccurate information, was falsely presented as depicting the Algerian athletes’ meal arrangements. The Committee firmly asserted that these allegations are baseless.

“The Algerian delegation is residing in respectable and appropriate conditions,” the statement emphasized, attributing this to the continuous efforts of the COA staff, in coordination with the Games’ organizing committee, and the strong support from the Algerian Embassy in Angola.

The COA accompanied its statement with a short video showcasing the positive atmosphere within the delegation. It noted that dedicated efforts have ensured all necessary conditions for the comfort and well-being of the athletes throughout the competition.

Regarding the circulated photographs, the Committee explained that they were taken spontaneously and outside of any official context. These images were then deliberately exploited by certain online pages that, according to the COA, have not covered the successes or positive stories of the young Algerian athletes since the Games began. Instead, these pages allegedly rushed to spread false and misleading information unrelated to reality.

The Olympic Committee further stressed that Algerian athletes, like all participating delegations, receive their main meals in the accredited restaurant within the Olympic Village, under the close supervision of accompanying staff, particularly the medical team. It added that during competitions or training sessions held at locations away from the accommodation, and considering the varying environmental conditions, climate, and dietary habits, appropriate measures are taken to ensure the athletes’ needs are met.
