New York, UN Headquarters – Algeria has issued a strong call for a comprehensive reform of the United Nations’ counter-terrorism architecture. Addressing the UN Security Council, the Algerian delegation outlined critical recommendations aimed at strengthening the global fight against terrorism and ensuring a more effective and coordinated international response.
The call for reform comes amid growing concerns about the evolving nature of terrorist threats worldwide. Algeria emphasized the need for a more holistic approach that addresses not only the symptoms of terrorism but also its root causes, including poverty, social exclusion, and political marginalization.
“The current UN counter-terrorism framework requires significant improvements to effectively address the complex challenges we face,” stated Ambassador Amar Ben Jamaa, Algeria’s representative to the United Nations. “We must ensure that our efforts are aligned with the principles of the UN Charter and international law, while also respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of member states.”
Algeria’s recommendations include enhancing information sharing and cooperation among member states, strengthening the capacity of national governments to prevent and counter terrorism, and promoting dialogue and understanding across cultures and religions. The delegation also stressed the importance of addressing the financing of terrorism and disrupting the flow of foreign terrorist fighters.
Furthermore, Algeria highlighted the need for greater transparency and accountability within the UN’s counter-terrorism bodies. The delegation proposed the establishment of a mechanism to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of UN counter-terrorism programs and ensure that they are aligned with the needs and priorities of member states.
The Algerian initiative has been welcomed by several member states, who have expressed their support for a comprehensive review of the UN’s counter-terrorism strategy. Discussions on the proposed reforms are expected to continue in the coming months, with the aim of reaching a consensus on a revised framework that can effectively address the evolving terrorist threat landscape.
Algeria’s proactive stance underscores its commitment to international peace and security and its determination to play a leading role in the global fight against terrorism.
