Culture Minister Consults Film Professionals on Industry Future

The Minister of Culture and Arts, Malika Bendouda, recently convened a consultative meeting with a group of filmmakers, producers, and cinema professionals at the ministry’s headquarters. This session is part of a series of constructive dialogues aimed at assessing the current state of the film industry in Algeria and developing strategies for its advancement, ultimately benefiting both artists and audiences while enhancing Algeria’s cultural influence.

Discussions centered on various aspects of Algerian cinema, starting with the need to improve training and production systems, and extending to strengthening distribution networks, cinemas, and innovative mechanisms for promoting the art form. Participants emphasized the importance of leveraging modern technologies to reduce production costs and improve artistic quality, while also ensuring accessibility to cinematic art and supporting both professionals and amateurs through the revitalization of film clubs and other production avenues.

Comparative models and experiences were also explored to diversify funding sources and ensure their sustainability. Particular attention was given to young, creative producers, with emphasis placed on opening new avenues for supporting emerging talents through a dedicated program for first-time filmmakers and young producers.

The importance of strengthening collaboration between television and film production, recognizing them as complementary artistic endeavors, was also addressed. The role of emerging companies specializing in visual effects and post-production was highlighted as a crucial element in the desired cinematic renaissance.

The session was attended by prominent figures from the film world, including actor Idir Ben Aibouche, winner of the Best African Actor award for 2025, director Rachid Belhadj, and director and screenwriter Rabah Slimani.

The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the film industry and fostering a vibrant cinematic landscape in Algeria. Further consultations are planned to refine strategies and implement concrete actions based on the valuable insights gained during the session.
