Algiers, December 19, 2025 – President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has called for greater collaboration between Algeria’s military industries and the nation’s universities and burgeoning startup ecosystem. The President emphasized the need for innovation and advancement within the defense sector during a visit to the Ministry of National Defense pavilion at the 33rd Algerian Production Fair.
President Tebboune highlighted Algeria’s self-sufficiency in the production of explosives, noting that this capability now allows the country to meet the needs of the domestic mining sector. He stressed the importance of utilizing locally produced explosives in infrastructure projects, specifically mentioning railway construction. Using domestic resources, he argued, would significantly reduce costs and accelerate project completion timelines compared to relying on imports.
During his visit, President Tebboune lauded the progress achieved by Algerian military industries. He stated emphatically that the era of simply welding iron and presenting it as local manufacturing is over. He stressed the importance of incorporating cutting-edge technologies and innovative solutions into the defense sector.
“The future of our military industry lies in embracing the talent and ingenuity found within our universities and emerging startups,” President Tebboune stated. He encouraged the defense industry to actively seek out partnerships and collaborations with these institutions to foster innovation and develop advanced technologies.
President Tebboune also stopped to examine locally manufactured drone aircraft, praising their crucial role in safeguarding Algeria’s national borders with domestically developed defense capabilities. The President’s remarks underscore the government’s commitment to strengthening Algeria’s defense capabilities through innovation, self-reliance, and strategic partnerships.
