Gara Djebilet Iron Ore Set to Arrive in Oran Next Month

Oran, Algeria – The first train carrying iron ore from the Gara Djebilet mine is scheduled to arrive directly in Oran by the end of January, marking a significant milestone in Algeria’s efforts to exploit its mineral resources and bolster industrial transportation networks.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced the development during the inauguration of the 33rd edition of the Algerian Production Fair on Thursday. Speaking at the stand of Tosyali Algeria, the President emphasized that this would be the first time iron ore has been transported by train from the Gara Djebilet mine to Oran since Algeria regained its national sovereignty. The railway line spans approximately 2000 kilometers.

During discussions with a Tosyali Algeria executive, President Tebboune highlighted the importance of the company’s expansion projects, particularly in Oran. He noted that the various facilities provided have enabled the company to launch several new units, including a desalination plant and a green hydrogen production project. These initiatives are expected to contribute significantly to the development of national industry and support the country’s energy transition.

The arrival of the Gara Djebilet iron ore in Oran represents a crucial step forward in Algeria’s strategy to diversify its economy and reduce its reliance on hydrocarbons. The Gara Djebilet mine, located in the Tindouf region, holds substantial iron ore reserves, and its exploitation is seen as a key driver of industrial growth.

The Algerian Production Fair, a major economic event, features the participation of over 600 national economic institutions, including public and private companies, small and medium-sized enterprises, startups, artisans, and traditional manufacturers.
