First Iron Ore Shipment from Gara Djebilet to Reach Oran by Month’s End

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has announced that the inaugural train carrying iron ore from the Gara Djebilet mine is scheduled to arrive in Oran by the end of January. This marks a significant step forward in the exploitation of Algeria’s mineral resources and the enhancement of its industrial transportation infrastructure.

The announcement was made during the President’s visit to the 33rd Algerian Production Fair on Thursday. While touring the stand of Tosyali Algeria, President Tebboune highlighted that the transport of iron ore by rail from Gara Djebilet to Oran represents a historic first since the nation regained its sovereignty, covering a distance of approximately 2000 kilometers.

During discussions with Tosyali Algeria executives, President Tebboune emphasized the importance of the company’s expansion projects, particularly in the Oran region. He noted that government support has facilitated the launch of several new ventures, including a seawater desalination plant and a green hydrogen production project. These initiatives are expected to significantly bolster national industry and support the country’s energy transition.

The Algerian Production Fair serves as a crucial economic platform, featuring the participation of over 600 national economic entities. These include public and private sector companies, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), startups, artisans, and traditional industries, underscoring the dynamism of Algeria’s national economic fabric.

This development signals a renewed focus on leveraging Algeria’s natural resources for economic growth and diversification. The Gara Djebilet mine is a key component of the government’s strategy to boost the steel industry and reduce reliance on imports. The successful transportation of iron ore to Oran is a major milestone in this ambitious project.
