Algiers – Algeria’s hydrocarbons and mining sector is playing a crucial role in strengthening the nation’s energy security and accelerating its transition towards a more sustainable environment. The sector is committed to achieving advanced performance levels while ensuring long-term energy and water security, and responsibly valorizing national hydrocarbon and mineral resources for future generations.
Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, emphasized the sector’s dedication to meeting the needs of various economic sectors, contributing to the national economy’s financing, and supporting sustainable development and economic stability.
A core element of the sector’s strategy is environmental protection. Ongoing efforts are focused on minimizing the carbon footprint through the implementation of various environmental projects. These initiatives aim to significantly reduce gas flaring to below 1%, achieved through precise emissions monitoring and effective regulatory and technical measures.
Arkab announced the creation of a national committee comprising key stakeholders. This committee is tasked with developing a roadmap for a national tool to detect, assess, and reduce methane emissions, aligning with Algeria’s environmental commitments.
Significant strides have been made in eliminating lead emissions from vehicles by marketing a single type of gasoline. This initiative has tangibly improved fuel quality and reduced polluting emissions. The sector is also actively promoting the circular economy by valorizing solid and organic waste and realizing the concept of “urban mining” through the recovery and recycling of metals from ferrous waste and other materials.
