New York – Throughout its term on the United Nations Security Council, Algeria has resolutely championed the Palestinian cause, consistently prioritizing it on the international stage. Demonstrating unwavering commitment, Algeria has tirelessly advocated for an end to the brutal conflict in the Gaza Strip.
Despite encountering obstacles, including vetoes, Algeria remained steadfast in its pursuit of Security Council action to protect the Palestinian people from aggression and enable the establishment of an independent state. Following the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Algeria has designated the Palestinian issue as a top priority within the Security Council.
The Algerian diplomatic mission in New York has played a pivotal role in advocating for justice for the Palestinian people, intensifying efforts and convening numerous meetings within the UN framework. Algeria commenced its Security Council term in January 2024, shortly after the onset of the devastating conflict in Gaza, by affirming the Palestinian cause as a central issue that cannot be ignored or sidelined. Algeria has proactively presented draft resolutions addressing the situation in Palestine, particularly in the Gaza Strip.
As a representative of both the Arab and African groups within the Security Council, Algeria has successfully garnered broad support for its proposed resolutions. These resolutions have focused on achieving a ceasefire in Gaza, facilitating the entry of humanitarian aid, and countering threats against the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Algeria has prioritized close coordination with Palestinian and Arab counterparts in all its initiatives and actions within the Security Council. This collaborative approach has been central to Algeria’s efforts to advance the Palestinian cause and ensure that regional perspectives are effectively represented within the UN system. Throughout its Security Council tenure, Algeria has consistently striven to amplify the voices of the Palestinian people and promote a just and lasting resolution to the conflict.
