Algiers, December 22, 2025 – Part of the minaret of the Sidi Mohammed Cherif Mosque in the Casbah of Algiers collapsed this evening, prompting a swift response from the Wilaya (Province) of Algiers.
According to a statement released by the Wilaya, the city of the Casbah is currently undergoing an extensive program of restoration and rehabilitation of several religious and historical landmarks. This initiative falls under the permanent plan for the preservation and restoration of the protected sector of the Casbah of Algiers, aiming to safeguard the cultural and religious heritage of this historic district.
The Sidi Mohammed Cherif Mosque has been subject to complex and delicate restoration work due to its advanced state of disrepair. Progress on the restoration had reached approximately 35% when the incident occurred. Initial reports suggest that the collapse of the minaret was due to the fragility of its infrastructure, a result of its age and exposure to natural weathering over many years.
Immediately following the collapse, specialized teams were dispatched to the site. The area has been secured, and all necessary safety measures have been implemented. The Wilaya confirms that the incident resulted in no casualties.
An in-depth technical investigation has been launched to determine the precise causes of the collapse. Appropriate measures will be taken based on the findings of this investigation. The Wilaya has pledged to rebuild the minaret according to its original architectural design, ensuring the preservation of the mosque’s historical and religious identity.
The Wilaya of Algiers emphasizes its commitment to taking all necessary measures to guarantee the safety of citizens and the preservation of the capital’s urban and historical heritage. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
