London, UK – Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was released by London police earlier today, following her arrest during a pro-Palestine demonstration. The arrest occurred amidst a protest organized in support of Palestinian rights.
Thunberg’s involvement stemmed from her support of the group ‘Palestine Action,’ which has been banned in the UK due to its activities targeting companies with ties to Israel. Details surrounding the specific charges remain limited, but authorities confirmed the arrest was related to her participation in the demonstration and alleged support for the banned organization.
The protest, reportedly organized by the ‘Prisoners for Palestine’ movement, took place outside the London offices of Aspen Insurance. The movement claims Aspen Insurance provides services to Elbit Systems, an Israeli defense company. ‘Prisoners for Palestine’ advocates for eight individuals allegedly affiliated with ‘Palestine Action’ who have been detained for approximately a year and are currently on hunger strike.
According to statements from the ‘Prisoners for Palestine’ movement, Thunberg was detained under terrorism legislation for holding a sign that read, “I support Palestine Action prisoners, I am against genocide.” This marks the first instance of a globally recognized figure being arrested in connection with supporting the organization, which was banned by British authorities in July of last year.
London police confirmed the arrest of a “22-year-old woman” for displaying a sign in support of a banned organization, referring to ‘Palestine Action,’ without explicitly naming Thunberg.
Greta Thunberg rose to international prominence as a leading voice in the fight against climate change and global warming, credited with raising public awareness, particularly among young people. Her activism has recently expanded to include support for the Palestinian cause. DZWatch will continue to follow this developing story.
