The death of Ghassan al-Naasan, a former prominent commander within the Syrian military, in Lebanon has ignited a wave of questions and speculation. Al-Naasan, known as “al-Tarmah,” previously held a leadership position within the 25th Division, once under the command of Suheil al-Hassan, nicknamed “The Tiger.”
Lebanese authorities have announced the arrest of a Syrian national, identified as (W.D.), in connection with al-Naasan’s death. The arrest took place in Kfaryassine, Keserwan district, following an investigation by Lebanese Intelligence. Preliminary reports suggest a financial dispute as the motive behind the killing.
According to Lebanese media outlets, al-Naasan was last seen entering a white Hyundai driven by an unidentified individual. His body was later discovered near his residence in the Keserwan area. He had previously resided in Tabarja, north of Beirut, after seeking refuge in Lebanon following the collapse of the Syrian regime.
Al-Naasan gained prominence as a field commander within the “al-Tarmah Regiment,” an elite fighting force that operated within the “Tiger Forces,” later reorganized as the 25th Special Missions Division of the former Syrian army. He was known for his role in several key battles during the Syrian conflict. After the fall of the Syrian regime on December 8, 2024, al-Naasan, like many other former officers and soldiers, fled to Lebanon, initially settling in the Tabarja region.
His death has resurfaced numerous questions, fueled by various narratives circulating on social media. These range from theories of targeted assassinations aimed at remnants of the former regime to internal conflicts or financial disputes.
The incident raises concerns about the possibility of a politically motivated assassination, particularly given al-Naasan’s past affiliation with high-ranking officials.
