ALGIERS – The Algerian Parliament has ratified a series of pivotal laws, marking a significant step towards modernizing the nation’s legal framework and addressing key historical issues. The legislative package, approved during a plenary session, encompasses critical areas such as electronic transactions, judicial reform, traffic regulations, and the criminalization of colonialism.
A key component of the approved legislation is a law establishing the general rules for trusted services in electronic transactions and electronic certification. This aims to bolster digital security, regulate electronic signatures, and protect data, aligning with the demands of the digital economy and fostering confidence in online transactions. This is a crucial step for Algeria’s digital future.
Parliamentarians also endorsed an organic law pertaining to the fundamental law of the judiciary. This legislation is expected to enhance the independence of the judicial branch and modernize the legal framework governing the duties and career paths of judges, thereby reinforcing the principles of justice and judicial efficiency.
Furthermore, a revised traffic law was approved, designed to improve road safety and reduce traffic accidents. This will be achieved through a revision of deterrent and regulatory provisions, ensuring they align with current traffic conditions and public safety requirements.
In a move with historical and sovereign implications, the parliament ratified a law criminalizing French colonialism in Algeria. This aims to solidify national memory and affirm historical truths, acknowledging the crimes and violations committed during the colonial period.
The session also included the ratification of a law amending and supplementing Order No. 70-86, which pertains to Algerian nationality law. This amendment seeks to adapt the legal text to national and international developments, ensuring greater clarity in the conditions for acquiring and losing citizenship.
These ratifications demonstrate a legislative commitment to strengthening the state’s legal framework, supporting reform efforts, and fostering development, protecting rights, and safeguarding national memory.
