Algiers – The Minister of Justice, Keeper of the Seals, Mr. Lotfi Boujemâa, stated on Wednesday that the proposed amendment to the Algerian Nationality Law aims to reinforce the sanctity of the bond between citizens and their nation. This bond, he emphasized, is fundamentally based on the principles of loyalty and belonging.
The Minister addressed the National People’s Assembly, highlighting the importance of safeguarding the integrity of Algerian citizenship. He argued that the proposed changes are designed to prevent the erosion of national identity and ensure that citizenship is granted to individuals who genuinely demonstrate allegiance to Algeria.
“The amendment seeks to protect the very essence of what it means to be Algerian,” Mr. Boujemâa explained. “It underscores the vital role of loyalty and a deep sense of belonging in the acquisition and retention of Algerian nationality.”
While details of the specific amendments remain under discussion, sources indicate that the proposals may include stricter criteria for naturalization and measures to address instances of dual nationality where conflicting loyalties may arise. The government maintains that these changes are not intended to discriminate against any particular group but rather to strengthen national cohesion and preserve the unique character of Algerian society.
The debate surrounding the proposed amendment is expected to continue in the coming weeks, with various political factions and civil society organizations expressing their views on the matter. The government has pledged to conduct a thorough and transparent consultation process to ensure that all perspectives are taken into account before any final decision is made.
This proposed amendment comes at a time of increasing global mobility and evolving concepts of citizenship. The Algerian government’s focus on loyalty and belonging reflects a broader trend among nations seeking to reaffirm their national identities in the face of globalization.
