South Kordofan Faces Humanitarian Catastrophe, Darfur Attack Repelled

DZWatch has received reports of a rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation in South Kordofan, as escalating conflict forces more and more people to flee their homes. The Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid in Abu Karshola, Mohamed Ismail, warned of a looming disaster, citing an overwhelming influx of displaced persons into the city.

Ismail stated that Abu Karshola is struggling to cope with the growing numbers, facing a severe shortage of essential aid. He emphasized that the assistance reaching those displaced barely covers their most basic needs.

“The living conditions for the displaced are extremely difficult,” Ismail noted, adding that most humanitarian organizations have left the governorate, leaving only two operating with limited capacity. This situation is exacerbating the suffering of thousands of displaced families, particularly women and children. He stressed that continued fighting in large parts of South Kordofan threatens further displacement in the coming days, with an inadequate humanitarian response.

In a separate development, the Joint Force of armed movements in Darfur, fighting alongside the Sudanese army, announced that it had repelled attacks launched by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on several areas in northern North Darfur State.

The Joint Force stated in a statement that the RSF had intensified its attacks on areas including Abu Qumra and its surroundings, attempting to seize control by force, targeting civilians and displaced persons fleeing the city of El Fasher. The statement added that the attacks included the burning of villages, looting of citizens’ property, and the commission of serious violations.

However, the Joint Forces, in coordination with the Sudanese army and popular resistance, managed to thwart the attack and force the attackers to retreat after inflicting heavy losses in lives and equipment. They also indicated that the RSF attempted to renew the attack on the same areas, but the defending forces were in a state of high readiness and were able to repel the attack again.

These developments come at a time when the states of Darfur and Kordofan have witnessed a broad military escalation for weeks, leading to the displacement of tens of thousands amidst dire warnings of a humanitarian crisis.
