Homs Mosque Bombing: Who is Responsible and What Were the Motives?

A deadly bombing at a mosque in Homs, Syria, has ignited a flurry of questions regarding the perpetrators and their potential motives. The attack, which occurred in the Wadi al-Dahab neighborhood, has raised concerns about escalating tensions and the fragile security situation in the region.

According to initial reports, the explosion resulted in at least eight fatalities and eighteen injuries. Syrian authorities have labeled the incident a “terrorist” act. State media reported that the blast was caused by explosives planted within the mosque, targeting an area frequented by worshippers. As of now, no group has claimed responsibility, and authorities have refrained from pointing fingers.

Political analyst Hamza Al-Muhaimeed suggests the timing and location of the bombing are particularly significant. He argues that targeting a mosque in a city with Homs’ sensitive sectarian makeup appears designed to disrupt peaceful coexistence between Sunni and Alawi communities. Al-Muhaimeed emphasized that Homs holds symbolic importance within Syria, making any security incident prone to dangerous political and sectarian exploitation.

While acknowledging the need for official investigation results, Al-Muhaimeed outlined three potential actors who could be behind the attack: remnants of the previous regime, the Islamic State group, and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). However, he cautioned against premature conclusions, stressing that only a thorough investigation can determine responsibility.

Al-Muhaimeed noted that the method of the attack – planting an explosive device inside the mosque – differs from typical Islamic State operations, which often involve suicide bombers targeting security forces. He added that recent IS attacks have primarily focused on security personnel in areas like Deir ez-Zor, rather than civilian gatherings in places of worship. He also suggested that Kurdish groups might be involved.

The bombing has further complicated an already volatile situation in Syria, raising fears of renewed sectarian conflict and instability. Investigations are ongoing, and the search for those responsible continues.
