Asfi Floods: Rights Group Accuses Moroccan Authorities of Negligence Following 37 Deaths
DZWatch has learned that a devastating flood in the Asfi region of Morocco has claimed the lives of at least 37 people. The disaster has prompted a strong reaction from a leading human rights organization, which is directly accusing Moroccan authorities of negligence.
The National Association for the Defense of Human Rights in Morocco has expressed deep concern over the impact of the recent floods, citing significant material losses and a severe impact on the living conditions of residents, particularly vulnerable populations and those with limited incomes.
In a statement released to the press, the rights group conveyed its complete and unconditional solidarity with the affected communities. The association strongly condemned what it described as a “clear failure by responsible parties to adopt preventative measures capable of mitigating the recurrence of such disasters,” despite repeated warnings from experts and civil society organizations.
The association is demanding a thorough and impartial investigation to determine responsibility and to impose legal penalties on anyone found to have been negligent in protecting the lives and property of citizens. It also urged various components of civil society and economic actors to immediately engage in urgent solidarity initiatives to alleviate the suffering of affected families.
The organization emphasized that human dignity is an indivisible value and that national solidarity is a moral and humanitarian duty. It called on everyone to unite efforts and stand together during this critical time to support the affected citizens and uphold their rights.
Local authorities report that the floods have resulted in the deaths of 37 people, representing the highest death toll from similar climatic disturbances in Morocco in over a decade.
