Mogadishu, December 27, 2025 – The Somali government has issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s recognition of the self-declared independent region of Somaliland, asserting that Somalia remains a unified nation and deeming the recognition ‘null and void’.
The statement, released by the office of Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, follows an announcement from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office regarding the formal recognition of Somaliland as a sovereign state.
“The Federal Republic of Somalia reiterates its absolute and non-negotiable commitment to its sovereignty, national unity and territorial integrity,” the Prime Minister’s office stated. The Somali government firmly rejects what it describes as a deliberate assault on its sovereignty and the illegal action taken by Israel in purportedly recognizing the northern region of Somalia.
The statement emphasized that Somaliland remains an integral part of the sovereign territory of the Federal Republic of Somalia and cannot be separated or disposed of. “Somalia is one sovereign and indivisible state, and any recognition that seeks to undermine this fact is null and void,” the statement continued.
The government asserted that matters concerning Somalia’s unity, governance, and constitutional order fall exclusively within the jurisdiction of the Somali people and must be resolved solely through legal, constitutional, and peaceful means.
The Somali government further warned that such illegitimate actions gravely undermine regional peace and stability, exacerbating political and security tensions in the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Middle East, and the broader region. These actions contradict the collective responsibilities of states in combating terrorism, including movements like Al-Shabaab and ISIS, and threaten to create favorable conditions for terrorist groups to exploit political instability and undermine efforts to achieve peace and security.
The government affirmed its determination to take all diplomatic measures to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Prime Minister has pledged to undertake every possible measure to defend the country’s unity and sovereignty.
