Algiers, December 26, 2025 – The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is set to officially recognize Zellige as an Algerian cultural heritage in 2026, DZWatch has learned.
According to Slimane Hachi, Director of the National Center for Prehistoric Anthropological and Historical Research, the official designation will solidify Algeria’s claim to the intricate art form. Hachi confirmed that the dossier submitted by Algeria in 2023, seeking the official recognition of Zellige as part of the nation’s cultural heritage, is slated for approval next year.
“This recognition by UNESCO is a significant victory for Algeria,” Hachi stated. “It underscores the undeniable link between Zellige and Algerian cultural identity.”
The anticipated UNESCO designation arrives amidst ongoing attempts to misappropriate the art of Zellige and falsely attribute its origins to Morocco. For years, Algeria has been actively working to protect its cultural heritage from such claims. The formal recognition by UNESCO is expected to serve as a strong deterrent against further attempts to distort the historical and cultural context of Zellige.
Zellige, characterized by its meticulously handcrafted mosaic tiles, is an integral part of Algerian architecture and artistic expression. The tiles, often featuring complex geometric patterns and vibrant colors, adorn historical buildings, mosques, and traditional homes throughout Algeria.
The announcement of the impending UNESCO recognition has been met with widespread celebration across Algeria. Many view it as a powerful affirmation of the country’s rich cultural legacy and a crucial step in safeguarding its artistic traditions for future generations. The official inscription in 2026 is expected to further promote the preservation and appreciation of Zellige both within Algeria and on the global stage.
