Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland: Strategic Interests?

Israel’s recent recognition of Somaliland has sparked considerable debate and analysis regarding the underlying motives and the broader implications for the Horn of Africa. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s announcement on Friday, declaring the ‘Republic of Somaliland’ as an independent and sovereign state, has been framed within the context of the ‘Abraham Accords.’ However, the Somali presidency has strongly condemned the move as a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Analysts suggest that Israel’s action aligns with a long-standing strategy of engagement in the Horn of Africa, dating back to the 1950s and 60s. This strategy, according to some experts, has been revived in recent years, particularly between 2010 and 2011.

The renewed interest in the Horn of Africa is attributed to several factors, including the rise of resistance movements in the Gaza Strip and Southern Lebanon, the repercussions of the Arab Spring, and the increasing Turkish influence in the region. The strategic location of Somaliland, overlooking the Gulf of Aden and the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, is also a key consideration. This position could potentially allow Israel to monitor Houthi activities in Yemen and oversee maritime traffic in the area.

Some observers believe that Israel views Somaliland as a potentially isolated entity, creating an opportunity for a closer, perhaps even dependent, relationship.

Another strategic objective for Israel is to send a message that it is actively reshaping the regional landscape, asserting its influence and pursuing its interests in a dynamic and evolving geopolitical environment. The recognition of Somaliland can be seen as a bold step in this direction, signaling a willingness to challenge existing norms and forge new alliances.
