Syrians Drown Near Border; Army Denies Coercion

Several Syrians have reportedly drowned in a river along the northern border of Lebanon while attempting to cross into Syria. Search and rescue operations are ongoing for those still missing, according to reports.

Initial reports alleged that the Lebanese army forced a group of Syrians towards the river during a period of heavy flooding in the Talkalakh region, near the Lebanese-Syrian border. These reports claimed that the Syrians were compelled to cross the overflowing river, leading to the tragic incident. It was further alleged that rescue teams managed to save a few individuals, while others, including elderly people and children, remain missing.

The Lebanese Army has vehemently denied these accusations. In a statement released earlier today, the military asserted that its forces did not force anyone to cross the border between Lebanon and Syria. The statement emphasized that no such orders were given, and that no information regarding an illegal border crossing attempt was received by the relevant units.

Furthermore, the Lebanese Army stated that it is actively participating in search and rescue operations in coordination with Syrian authorities to locate those who reportedly drowned. The army reiterated its commitment to border security and emphasized its respect for international law and human rights.

The Lebanese-Syrian border has long been a point of contention, with ongoing issues related to smuggling and illegal crossings. The situation is further complicated by the presence of a large Syrian refugee population in Lebanon. Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, Lebanese authorities have detained numerous Syrians for illegal entry, leading to accusations of pressure tactics aimed at forcing refugees to return to Syria.

The investigation into this tragic incident is ongoing, and DZWatch will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
