Senate President Nasseri Convenes Expanded Bureau Meeting

Senate President Azzouz Nasseri chaired an expanded meeting of the Senate Bureau today, bringing together parliamentary group leaders and the parliamentary observer. The meeting focused on the Senate’s agenda for the period between January 13th and 22nd, 2026.

During this period, the Senate is scheduled to examine and debate five draft laws. Additionally, the Bureau will review the status of submitted oral and written questions. The meeting also addressed the confirmation of a new member of the Senate appointed under the presidential third.

According to a statement from the upper house of Parliament, two draft laws have been referred to the Committee on Legal and Administrative Affairs, Human Rights, Local Government, Regional Planning, and Territorial Division. These include the organic law on the fundamental law of the judiciary and the law amending and supplementing Order No. 70-86 of December 15, 1970, concerning Algerian nationality. Furthermore, the draft law criminalizing French colonialism in Algeria has been referred to the National Defense Committee.

Two additional draft laws have been referred to the Committee on Equipment and Local Development. These are the draft law on traffic law and the draft law defining the general rules relating to trust services for electronic transactions and electronic identification, with the aim of preparing reports on the matter.

Regarding the Senate’s work schedule for the upcoming period, it was decided to “resume public sessions starting on the morning of Tuesday, January 13, 2026, with the aforementioned five draft laws to be put to a vote in a plenary session to be held on the evening of Wednesday, January 21, 2026,” according to the same source.

Concerning the item related to oral and written questions, and “after considering the new questions recently submitted to the Bureau’s secretariat, numbering 10 oral questions and 5 written questions, the Senate Bureau decided to refer them to the government for fulfillment of the required formal conditions.”

Regarding the confirmation of Abdel Nasser Hammoud, the new member appointed by the President of the Republic to the Senate under the presidential third, it was decided to “refer the file to the Committee on Legal and Administrative Affairs, Human Rights, Local Government, Regional Planning, and Territorial Division to prepare a report on the confirmation of membership, so that it can be presented during the next plenary session to the members of the Council for approval.”
