The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Yacine Mehdi Oualid, conducted an inspection of several vital fisheries and aquaculture projects in the Tlemcen province over the weekend. This visit underscores the government’s commitment to bolstering the national capabilities within the fisheries sector, supporting local development, enhancing food security, and creating employment opportunities.
The Minister’s itinerary included the inauguration of a first-class and a second-class fish farm, with thorough examinations of their equipment and facilities. Furthermore, he laid the foundation stone for an aquaculture activity zone in the municipality of El Bordj, marking the commencement of its development.
The Minister was accompanied by representatives from the Mauritanian embassy, the Governor of Tlemcen, the Director General of Fisheries and Aquaculture, and the Director General of the Algerian Chamber of Fisheries and Aquaculture. Local officials, security personnel, and members of the media also joined the tour.
A visit to the port of Sidi Youcha in Dar Yaghmouracene included a technical presentation detailing the port’s current status, operational capacities, and development prospects. The Minister held a consultative meeting with wholesale fish vendors to discuss proposals for improving working conditions and promoting the marketing sector. A separate meeting was also held with deep-sea fishing vessel operators within the framework of the Algerian-Mauritanian agreement.
The inspection extended to shipbuilding and maintenance projects, including a visit to SARL Rabie, where a 40-meter fishing vessel and four ‘Jiab’ type vessels were inspected. At SARL Techno Naval, the Minister reviewed four completed vessels measuring 37.5 meters in length and 9.5 meters in width. The tour also included an inspection of a 250-ton vessel crane, a vessel maintenance area, equipment for a bluefin tuna fattening farm, and the inauguration of an aquaculture vessel.
Additionally, Ms. Tahraoui, the owner of a startup dedicated to marketing seafood products via a digital application, presented her project’s operational mechanisms and objectives for modernizing the marketing sector.
This visit aims to support productive investment in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors, strengthen infrastructure, and enhance national capabilities, ultimately contributing to the strengthening of the local economy and achieving food security.
