Today, the Algerian Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, ceremoniously lays the cornerstone of the Tala Hamza-Amizour zinc and lead mining project in Bejaia. This venture, a collaboration between Algerian and Australian interests, promises to tap into a mine with an impressive reserve of 34 million tons. Plans are underway to extract 2 million tons of raw metal annually, aiming to produce 170,000 tons of zinc concentrate and 30,000 tons of lead concentrate.

The mining project is set to be a boon for employment, directly creating around 800 jobs and indirectly more than 4,000. It is expected to significantly contribute to the national market, satisfying the high demand for these metals, with surplus production poised for export.

Dignitaries attending the ceremony include the Governor of Bejaia, the CEO of Sonaram, the head of the National Agency for Mining Activities, the CEO of the National Institution for Non-Ferrous Mining Products and Useful Materials, the director of the joint Algerian-Australian company “Western Mediterranean Zinc WMZ” responsible for the project’s execution, and officials from the ministry and mining sector, alongside the Australian delegation led by the CEO of the Australian mining company “Terramin.”

As the Tala Hamza-Amizour project takes shape, it is set to bolster Algeria’s mining industry, enhance its export capabilities, and foster economic growth, all while reinforcing the strong bilateral relations with Australia.

This strategic move aligns with Algeria’s broader objectives to diversify its economy and reduce reliance on hydrocarbons by leveraging its rich mineral resources. The project’s success will be a testament to the country’s commitment to sustainable and responsible mining practices, positioning Algeria as a key player in the global mining industry.
