Algiers, December 29, 2025 – Ongoing construction at Martyrs’ Square (Sahat Echouhada) in Algiers is set to unveil a unique feature: glass walkways designed to allow visitors to observe and appreciate the archaeological remains beneath the surface. This ambitious project aims to seamlessly connect the square with the picturesque Mismaka Port promenade, building upon the recent opening of the first phase to the public, which included access to underground passages and a commercial center.
According to a statement released by the Algiers Governorate, Governor Abdelnour Rabehi, accompanied by the CEO of the COSIDER Group, conducted an inspection of the project yesterday. The visit included a review of the construction of a terrace overlooking the promenade and a parking facility with a capacity of 400 vehicles.
Governor Rabehi received a detailed presentation on the Martyrs’ Square redevelopment plan, which encompasses an area of 7,986 square meters. The comprehensive renovation will feature the installation of elevated glass walkways above the archaeological remnants, providing a distinctive vantage point for visitors to explore the historical significance of the site. Furthermore, the project includes the installation of elevators and escalators to facilitate convenient access between the square and the Mismaka Port promenade.
The presentation also highlighted the development of various spaces and parks leading to the “Mustafa Ben Boulaïd” parking area. The area gained after the demolition of buildings and warehouses stretching from the Admiralty towards the city center will be transformed into recreational spaces and restaurants. This redevelopment aims to revitalize the area and offer enhanced leisure opportunities for residents and tourists alike.
The Martyrs’ Square project represents a significant investment in Algiers’ cultural heritage and urban development. The integration of archaeological preservation with modern amenities promises to create a vibrant and engaging public space for generations to come.
