The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has announced a series of urgent measures to ensure the availability of corn in the national market. This action follows reported shortages of this essential commodity, primarily used in poultry feed production.
The decision was made after a meeting between the Minister and representatives of the poultry farming sector. The meeting assessed the increasing demand for corn and the necessity for immediate intervention to stabilize the market and prevent disruptions affecting breeders and feed manufacturers.
A statement from the Ministry indicated that the National Office for Livestock Feed and Poultry Breeding (ONAB SPA) will import a total of 1,150,000 tons of corn between December 28, 2025, and the end of February 2026. This will be done according to a scheduled distribution plan designed to meet national needs regularly.
Specifically, 250,000 tons of corn are expected to arrive between December 28 and January 1, 2026, through the ports of Oran, Algiers, Skikda, and Bejaia. This will be followed by 500,000 tons during January and 400,000 tons in February 2026.
The Ministry has assured all professionals in the poultry sector that the imported and planned quantities are currently sufficient to cover the demand in the national market.
Given the recurring annual corn shortages, the Ministry also announced the establishment of a strategic reserve stock to ensure a regular supply and stabilize prices in the future. This initiative aims to prevent future market volatility and protect the interests of both producers and consumers.
Furthermore, the Ministry called on all stakeholders in the sector to act responsibly and adopt regular supply practices to ensure market balance. The Ministry affirmed its commitment to mobilizing all necessary resources to continue providing this vital commodity, which constitutes approximately 80 percent of poultry feed ingredients.
