Analysts: Trump’s Press Conference with Netanyahu – What Was the Goal?

Miami, FL – A recent press conference featuring former U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sparked considerable debate among analysts regarding Trump’s underlying motivations. The meeting, held in Miami, was marked by what some observers described as a particularly warm reception and strong show of support for Netanyahu.

Trump addressed reporters, emphasizing his long-standing positive relationship with Netanyahu, whom he referred to as a “war hero.” He also reiterated his willingness to consider military action against Iran should it continue its missile development program. Trump stated that Netanyahu was “the reason Israel continues,” and claimed to have discussed a potential pardon for the Prime Minister with Israeli President Isaac Herzog – a claim Herzog immediately denied.

Notably, Trump reportedly adjusted the timing of the press conference to coincide with Israel’s 8 PM news broadcast, a move seen by some as an intentional effort to bolster Netanyahu’s standing within Israel. Adel Shadeed, a researcher specializing in Israeli affairs, suggested this could be a prelude to seeking concessions related to a potential ceasefire agreement.

However, not all analysts share this view. Military expert General Faiz al-Duwairi characterized Trump as unpredictable and prone to creating ambiguity. He observed that Trump appeared to be endorsing Netanyahu’s agenda wholesale, seemingly abandoning his own previously articulated plan for Gaza.

Former National Security Advisor Mike Fivevel noted that the press conference failed to address key questions regarding the disarmament of Gaza, the nature of the international stabilization force, and the composition of the proposed peace council. Fivevel also pointed out that Trump selectively called on specific journalists, avoiding potentially challenging questions. Netanyahu, for his part, remained largely silent, suggesting that the real negotiations are taking place behind closed doors with figures like Secretary of State Marco Rubio, envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner. According to reports, Netanyahu and Rubio held a closed-door meeting following the press conference.
