Algeria Strengthens National Memory Protection with New Law

Algiers, December 30, 2025 – Algeria has taken a significant step towards safeguarding its national memory with the enactment of a law criminalizing French colonialism. This landmark legislation aims to address historical injustices and ensure the preservation of Algerian identity, according to Mohamed Lahcen Zeghidi, Coordinator of the National Committee for History and Memory.

In a statement released today in Algiers, Mr. Zeghidi emphasized the importance of this new law, highlighting its role in protecting the nation’s historical narrative. He noted that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has made the preservation of national memory a top priority within his administration’s commitments.
