Madrid, Spain – The Spanish Ministry of Consumer Affairs has ordered advertising platforms to remove listings promoting tourist accommodations in Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories. This move marks a significant step by the left-leaning Spanish government, which has increasingly positioned itself as a leading European voice against Israeli settlement policies and the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The Ministry stated on Tuesday that it had identified 138 advertisements for tourist accommodations across seven platforms operating in Spain. “A first warning was issued to these multinational companies, informing them of the illegal content found on their platforms, related to commercial advertisements for accommodation located in the Palestinian territories occupied by Israel,” the statement read. The companies were instructed to immediately withdraw or block the listings.
The Ministry further warned of potential consequences for non-compliance, including further action. The decision is rooted in a decree approved by the Spanish Parliament in October, aimed at supporting the Palestinian people. This decree encompasses measures such as restricting arms sales to Israel and prohibiting promotional advertising for products originating from Israeli settlements or occupied territories.
Commenting on the new ban, the Ministry asserted that “these accommodations contribute to the normalization of a colonial system considered illegal under international law, and to prolonging its lifespan.”
A Shift in Policy
Spanish foreign policy has undergone a notable shift, demonstrating greater independence and proactivity in addressing Middle Eastern crises, particularly the Palestinian issue. This change has manifested in several practical measures, including increased humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, pressure within the European Union for stricter stances, and the prohibition of entry for Israeli individuals deemed responsible for the conflict.
Other countries have also taken similar steps. In October, [Country Name] announced [Briefly mention similar action].
