President Tebboune Denies Troop Deployment to Tunisia, Warns of Discord

Algiers – President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has firmly denied allegations of Algerian military presence within Tunisian territory. In a national address delivered before Parliament, the President cautioned against attempts to sow discord between Algeria and Tunisia, emphasizing Algeria’s unwavering respect for Tunisian sovereignty.

President Tebboune stated, “Algeria has never interfered, not even by a fraction, in Tunisia’s internal affairs, and our army has never set foot on Tunisian soil.” He lauded the strong sense of national identity within Tunisia, warning against those who mistakenly perceive it as vulnerable. “There are those who seek to dismantle the fraternal bond between Algeria and Tunisia, believing it will make them easier to prey upon,” he added.

He further emphasized the strong relationship between himself and Tunisian President Kais Saied, stating that President Saied is neither seeking normalization with Israel nor rushing towards it. “Any harm inflicted upon Tunisia is an affront to Algeria,” President Tebboune declared, underscoring the intertwined security of both nations.

President Tebboune also reaffirmed Algeria’s steadfast commitment to the Palestinian cause, asserting that Algerian diplomacy “has not and will not change. We stand with Palestine and will not abandon it, regardless of criticism.” He acknowledged the suffering in Gaza, pledging continued support, as demonstrated by Algeria’s actions within the Security Council.

Addressing the Western Sahara issue, the President called for respect for the will of the people, adherence to international law, and recognition of the right to self-determination. Regarding the Libyan crisis, he expressed deep concern, stating, “The situation in Libya tears at our hearts, and we hope for a national, internal solution.” He also highlighted Algeria’s strong fraternal ties with its African neighbors, particularly in the Sahel region.

Turning to economic matters, President Tebboune outlined Algeria’s ambitions to significantly increase phosphate production, aiming to multiply current capabilities fivefold. He also highlighted the significance of the Gara Djebilet mine, envisioning it as the realization of a “strong Algeria with its mines,” and projecting it to become the third-largest iron ore mine globally.

President Tebboune has consistently delivered an annual address to the nation before both houses of Parliament since December 2023.
