Heavy Snowfall Isolates Inland Highlands, Key Roads Closed

Algiers – Heavy snowfall across Algeria’s inland highlands has severely disrupted traffic, leading to the closure of vital routes, particularly in mountainous regions where significant snow accumulation has been reported.

National Gendarmerie services have confirmed the complete closure of National Road 33, a crucial link between the provinces of Bouira and Tizi Ouzou. The affected sections include the areas of Tikjda in the municipality of El Asnam and Akouker in the municipality of Bechloul, rendered impassable due to the adverse weather conditions.

Further disruptions have been reported along the same National Road 33 in the Asoul area of Ait Boumahdi municipality. Additionally, National Road 15, another key artery connecting Tizi Ouzou and Bouira, has been shut down at the Tizi Ouzou side, specifically in the Faj Tirourda area within the municipality of Iferhounene.

While these key routes remain closed, authorities have stated that other roads are currently open to traffic. However, motorists are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution, especially in elevated areas, and to adhere strictly to safety guidelines until weather conditions improve and the closed roads can be reopened.

DZWatch has learned that National Gendarmerie teams and relevant authorities are closely monitoring the situation on the ground. Efforts are underway to prepare for the intervention of public works services to clear the snow and restore traffic flow as quickly as possible.
