Russia Announces Expansion of Buffer Zone in Northeast Ukraine

Russian forces are reportedly continuing their advance in northeastern Ukraine, aiming to expand what Moscow describes as a “buffer zone.” According to reports, the announcement comes as the new year begins, signaling a potential escalation in the conflict.

Citing General Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, reports indicate that President Vladimir Putin has instructed the military to enlarge this zone, specifically targeting the Sumy and Kharkiv regions of Ukraine, which border Russia. The expansion is expected to take place throughout the coming year.

General Gerasimov reportedly inspected the “North” group of forces, a formation established at the beginning of 2024. This group is tasked with creating the buffer zone along the border, repelling Ukrainian forces, and achieving further territorial gains. The stated aim is to push back Ukrainian military presence from the border regions.

These developments follow Russia’s vow to retaliate against what it alleges was an attempt to target President Putin’s residence. Kyiv has denied any involvement in such an attempt, dismissing the claims as a ploy to disrupt potential peace negotiations as the conflict approaches its fourth year.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has condemned Moscow’s plans for Sumy and Kharkiv as “insane,” vowing that Ukraine will mount a strong resistance to defend these regions. The situation remains tense, with both sides preparing for further conflict in the area. The expansion of the buffer zone could significantly alter the dynamics of the war. This development is being closely monitored by international observers.
