Tensions in Yemen have escalated following a reported airstrike on Al Mukalla port. The port, controlled by the Southern Transitional Council (STC), was allegedly targeted early Tuesday morning. The Saudi-led coalition announced it conducted the strike, claiming it hit weapons and military vehicles arriving from the UAE port of Fujairah on two ships.
This incident marks a significant point in the strained relationship between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates regarding the ongoing conflict in Yemen. Arab leaders have reiterated the importance of Yemeni unity and regional stability, while the Arab League Secretary-General has called for restraint.
The STC, advocating for the secession of southern Yemen, recently made unexpected military advancements, claiming control over the Hadramaut and al-Mahra governorates. They have reportedly defied local and regional calls to withdraw their forces.
According to reports, the coalition conducted a limited airstrike targeting external military support at Al Mukalla port. The coalition stated that no casualties or collateral damage occurred. They claim two ships arriving from Fujairah port on Saturday and Sunday failed to obtain official permits and deactivated their tracking systems. These ships allegedly delivered weapons to support STC forces, further fueling the conflict.
Coalition spokesperson Brigadier General Turki al-Maliki stated the strike was a response to a request from Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council head Rashad al-Alimi, seeking immediate action to protect civilians in Hadramaut governorate. He cited “serious and appalling humanitarian violations against them by armed elements affiliated with the Southern Transitional Council.”
Following the strike, President al-Alimi reportedly demanded the withdrawal of all UAE forces from Yemeni territory within 24 hours and declared a 90-day state of emergency across the country. Al-Alimi addressed the nation in a televised speech, outlining the reasons for the drastic measures.
