Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding Concludes Nomination Assessment for 2023

The Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding has announced the completion of the preliminary sorting of nominations for its ninth season in 2023. Dr. Hanan Al Fayadh, the spokesperson for the award, noted that this year, nominations were received from 19 Arab countries, including Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Morocco, Lebanon, Jordan, UAE, Kuwait, Somalia, Iraq, Tunisia, Sudan, Bahrain, Yemen, Palestine, Oman, Libya, and Algeria. Among the non-Arab countries that participated this season were Spain, Pakistan, the UK, the USA, Germany, Bulgaria, Canada, France, Malaysia, and Mexico.

Egypt led the Arab countries in the number of nominations, with 58, followed by Saudi Arabia with 29, and Qatar with 13. Spain was at the forefront of the non-Arab countries with 29 nominations, followed by Pakistan with 12, and the UK with 10.

In terms of nationalities, Egyptians were the most nominated with 52 entries, Saudis with 22, Syrians with 14, and Iraqis, Spaniards, and Pakistanis with 10 nominations each, followed by Moroccans and Somalis with 9 each.

The nominated works span various humanities disciplines, notably literature, Islamic studies, philosophy, social sciences, political science, and history.

The winners will be announced in a formal ceremony on December 12, 2023, in Doha, Qatar.

The ninth edition of the award has selected Spanish as a main language alongside English, with Bulgarian, Sindhi, and Somali as subsidiary languages to encourage translation efforts to and from Arabic in these language-speaking countries, promoting cultural exchange with the Arab world.

Since its inception in 2015, this award has grown to be the largest globally for translations to and from Arabic, with a total monetary value of two million US dollars. It aims to honor long-term achievements and efforts in the field of translation and to recognize the role of individuals and institutions in strengthening friendships and cooperation between peoples worldwide, fostering diversity, plurality, and openness.
