A recent report highlights the critical role of a clandestine Ukrainian drone unit in extending the conflict into Russian territory. The unit, dubbed the ‘Ghost Unit,’ operates long-range drones targeting strategic assets deep within Russia.
According to the report, the unit conducts precision strikes using ‘Liutyi’ drones, capable of carrying substantial explosive payloads and flying distances up to 1500 kilometers. The unit focuses exclusively on high-value military and strategic objectives, particularly oil refineries and energy infrastructure, aiming to weaken the Russian economy that fuels the war.
The report details the meticulous preparations for a drone strike. Under the cover of darkness, drones are prepared for launch with utmost secrecy. Personnel, clad in helmets, masks, and protective vests, meticulously finalize preparations before rapidly dismantling and evacuating the launch site. Shortly after, the report claims that information arrives confirming successful strikes on targets such as the Stavrolen petrochemical plant in the Stavropol region.
The unit’s commander emphasizes the need for speed and precision, stating that personnel have mere seconds to react to alerts and seek shelter. The report underscores the unit’s critical role in Ukraine’s war strategy. The development of this drone capability was reportedly spurred by the reluctance of Western allies to supply Ukraine with long-range missiles. The ‘Ghost Unit’ has become a key instrument for striking deep within Russian territory.
The increased drone strikes are happening as negotiators attempt to find a path toward de-escalation.
