Civil Defense Responds to Over 3,000 Incidents on New Year’s Eve

Algeria’s Civil Defense units responded to 3,002 incidents across the nation between December 31, 2025, and 8:00 AM on January 1, 2026. Responding to emergency calls from citizens, the units intervened at an average rate of one incident every 28 seconds.

These interventions spanned a range of Civil Defense activities. A total of 2,071 medical evacuations were carried out, alongside 472 diverse interventions. These included traffic accidents, domestic incidents, gas-related emergencies, fires, and public safety-related tasks.

Road Accidents: Civil Defense services responded to 180 road accidents, tragically resulting in one fatality at the scene and injuries to 205 people. The injured received first aid and were transported to local hospitals. The heaviest toll was recorded in Boumerdès, following a collision between a motorcycle and a truck on the Khémis El Khechna bypass towards Algiers, in the municipality of Khémis El Khechna, resulting in one death.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Civil Defense units also assisted six individuals suffering from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, stemming from heating appliances and water heaters in the wilayas of Naama, Algiers, and Setif. Sadly, three fatalities were recorded due to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Fires: Civil Defense services extinguished three urban and industrial fires in the wilayas of Béchar, Boumerdès, and Béjaïa. In Béchar, two people sustained superficial burns in a house fire caused by a butane gas leak. They were treated and transported to Trabbi Boudjemâa Hospital. In Boumerdès, a fire was extinguished in a plastic manufacturing workshop on the ground floor of a building in the Halaimia neighborhood of Boudouaou. In Béjaïa, a fire broke out in a jewelry store on Asseghir Street, prompting the evacuation of 15 residents as a precautionary measure; no casualties were reported. The rapid intervention of Civil Defense personnel contained the fires and prevented their spread to adjacent buildings.

Civil Defense services in El Tarf also responded to a city gas explosion inside a kitchen on the second floor of a building in the Bordj Naam neighborhood of Dheran municipality, during plumbing work. Two people were injured after falling from the second floor, and a third person was in shock. The injured were treated and transferred to the hospital.
