Crans-Montana, Switzerland – A devastating incident struck the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana in the early hours of January 1, 2026, as a powerful explosion ripped through the popular bar, ‘Le Constellation’. The blast, followed by a raging fire, has resulted in numerous casualties.
Swiss authorities are currently investigating the cause of the explosion. While the investigation is in its preliminary stages, police have indicated that a deliberate attack is unlikely. However, all possibilities are being explored.
The explosion occurred at approximately 1:30 AM, during New Year’s Eve celebrations. Initial reports indicate a high number of fatalities and approximately 100 individuals injured. Many of the injured are reported to be in critical condition. Frederic Gessler, police chief of the Canton of Valais, confirmed the information during a press conference.
Injured individuals have been transported to hospitals in Sion, Lausanne, Geneva, and Zurich to receive urgent medical attention. The victims are believed to be of various nationalities, reflecting the international crowd present at the bar during the New Year’s festivities.
Unofficial sources suggest the death toll could be higher, with some local media outlets reporting as many as forty fatalities and over one hundred injuries. It’s estimated that over 100 people were inside ‘Le Constellation’ when the tragedy occurred.
The government of the Canton of Valais has declared a state of emergency, mobilizing all available resources for the rescue and recovery efforts. Cantonal and municipal police, civil protection units, and fire services are participating in the operation, with helicopter support also deployed. The area surrounding the site has been completely cordoned off, and a no-fly zone has been established over Crans-Montana.
