Hamas Backs Technical Constitutional Amendments, With Conditions

Algiers, DZWatch – Abdelali Hassani Cherif, the head of the Movement of Society for Peace (MSP), alluded to the proposed technical constitutional amendments announced following the recent Council of Ministers meeting.

Speaking at the annual Women’s Forum, themed “Women’s Partnership in Decision-Making,” Hassani Cherif stated, “Algeria witnesses constitutional amendments frequently, and the Movement of Society for Peace has principled positions on this matter.”

The political leader elaborated on his party’s stance regarding the technical constitutional amendment, the implementation of which has been postponed. He clarified that the MSP supports any constitutional amendment that originates from the consolidation of freedoms and democracy, and the strengthening of mechanisms related to deepening political reform.

“Hamas [MSP] supports any constitutional reform that is linked to enshrining democratic performance and preserving the political mechanisms that deepen democratic practice and assist in deepening political reform,” he added.

The MSP’s conditional support highlights the ongoing debate surrounding constitutional reform in Algeria and the diverse perspectives of political actors on the matter.
