Mexico City, January 3, 2026 – A powerful earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale has struck southwestern Mexico, resulting in casualties and widespread panic. Initial reports confirm at least two fatalities and dozens of injuries. Even President Claudia Sheinbaum was forced to evacuate the Presidential Palace during her regular morning press conference. The sudden sounding of earthquake sirens prompted the immediate evacuation of the palace, including the president and attending journalists. They returned to the building several minutes later after the immediate threat had passed.
President Sheinbaum stated that the epicenter of the earthquake was located approximately 15 kilometers from San Marcos in the southern state of Guerrero, roughly 230 kilometers from Mexico City. Preliminary reports indicate no major damage in either Mexico City or Guerrero, though assessments are ongoing.
