Government Forces Reshape Control Map in Hadramaut

Recent developments in Hadramaut Governorate have significantly altered the balance of power in Yemen, following advances by government-backed forces in this strategically important, resource-rich region. Hadramaut constitutes roughly one-third of Yemen’s geographical area, making its control paramount.

Governor of Hadramaut, Salem Ahmed al-Khanbashi, announced Saturday the successful completion of securing military camps in the Wadi and Desert directorates. He confirmed the full deployment of government forces in all vital locations, including the securement of Seyoun International Airport and several sovereign and service facilities.

Al-Khanbashi stated that the “Nation Shield” forces have commenced their movement towards the Hadramaut coast, as part of their national mission to establish security and stability, protect vital and sovereign installations, safeguard public and private property, and ensure the safety of citizens and their assets.

Expulsion of Southern Transitional Council Elements

Separately, the Hadramaut Protection Forces – affiliated with the tribal alliance – announced their seizure of the headquarters of the Second Military Region Command in Mukalla, after expelling elements of the Southern Transitional Council (STC). These forces, fighting in support of government troops, added that they had also secured the branch of the Central Bank of Yemen in Mukalla.

Analysts suggest that these field developments indicate the Yemeni government is nearing full control over Hadramaut Governorate. The government currently controls most of Hadramaut, including Seyoun International Airport and the presidential palace in the city, as well as the Second Military Region in Mukalla, considered one of the most important military headquarters in the governorate, in addition to the Central Bank branch. Further advances are anticipated, potentially leading to complete control of Hadramaut.

The government also controls large areas of Taiz Governorate, including the provincial capital (Taiz city), and most of Marib Governorate, including its center and oil fields.
