The composure of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum during the evacuation of the presidential palace following a powerful earthquake has drawn widespread admiration on social media. Many users have lauded her calm demeanor as a display of exceptional crisis management skills.
A 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck the coast of Mexico early Friday. Authorities have reported over a thousand aftershocks since, warning that tremors could continue for days or weeks, potentially with similar or greater intensity.
The epicenter was located approximately 15 kilometers from San Marcos in the state of Guerrero, on the Pacific coast, at a depth of 35 kilometers. The earthquake’s impact was felt as far as Mexico City, 230 kilometers away, as well as in Acapulco and seven other states, including Morelos and Oaxaca.
Videos captured by mobile phones and surveillance cameras showed buildings swaying dramatically and widespread panic among citizens in the streets. Social media users shared footage documenting the immediate aftermath of the natural disaster.
Mexican authorities have confirmed at least two fatalities and dozens of injuries as a result of the earthquake. Hundreds of homes have been damaged, and numerous buildings have collapsed. Highways have cracked, and hospitals and public institutions have sustained partial damage.
The earthquake occurred during a live press conference led by President Sheinbaum at the presidential palace. As the ground began to shake violently, causing visible alarm among attendees, Sheinbaum calmly stated, “My God, there’s an earthquake. Let’s all exit calmly.” She oversaw an orderly evacuation of the palace. Minutes after the tremors subsided, she returned to complete the press conference, dedicating a portion of it to providing an update on the earthquake and its consequences.
The President’s measured response has resonated with many, highlighting the importance of leadership during times of crisis.
Analysts suggest that this event will further solidify her image as a steady and capable leader.
