British and French fighter jets conducted airstrikes on a site near Palmyra in central Syria late Saturday, according to reports. The UK Ministry of Defence stated that the location was believed to be an underground weapons storage facility formerly controlled by the Islamic State group.
A statement released by the Ministry of Defence indicated that initial assessments suggest the target, situated a few miles north of Palmyra, was successfully struck. The Ministry further stated that the underground storage facility was suspected of previous use by ISIS in Syria.
“Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of tunnels leading to the facility,” the statement read.
The Ministry added, “While a detailed assessment is now underway, initial indications are that the target has been successfully destroyed, and there is no indication of any civilian casualties.”
DZWatch will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
