New Traffic Law Prioritizes Prevention, Aims for Safer Roads

Algiers – A comprehensive new traffic law, currently under review by the Council of the Nation, signals a significant shift in the government’s approach to road safety. The legislation emphasizes preventative measures alongside traditional deterrents, according to Ali Chekian, President of the National Academy for Road Safety and Security.

The proposed law aims to create a safer road environment through a multi-faceted strategy. This includes enhanced driver education programs, stricter vehicle safety standards, and improved infrastructure designed to minimize accident risks. The focus on prevention represents a departure from previous strategies that primarily relied on punitive measures.

Mr. Chekian highlighted that the bill reflects an understanding that lasting improvements in road safety require a proactive approach. By addressing the root causes of accidents, such as inadequate training and unsafe vehicles, the law seeks to reduce the number of incidents and ultimately save lives.

The National Academy for Road Safety and Security has played a key role in shaping the new legislation, providing expert advice and guidance to policymakers. The Academy’s research and analysis have informed the development of evidence-based strategies to address the most pressing road safety challenges facing the nation.

While the details of the proposed law are still under discussion, it is expected to include provisions for increased penalties for serious traffic violations, such as drunk driving and reckless speeding. However, the emphasis remains on preventing these violations from occurring in the first place through education, awareness campaigns, and improved enforcement of existing regulations.

The Council of the Nation is expected to thoroughly examine the bill before its final approval. The government hopes that the new traffic law will contribute to a significant reduction in road accidents and create a safer and more secure environment for all road users.
