In an alarming development, Israeli forces raided Gaza’s largest healthcare facility, Al-Shifa Medical Complex, early Wednesday morning, escalating the ongoing conflict in the region. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, moments before the incursion, an Israeli officer contacted Dr. Munir Al-Barsh, the health director in the sector. In a recorded conversation, Dr. Al-Barsh attempted to explain the hospital’s layout, emphasizing that every inch of the facility housed patients and displaced civilians. He warned that an Israeli army invasion would cause terror among patients already struggling to receive minimal medical care under the blockade.
Dr. Al-Barsh informed the Israeli officer that the hospital courtyard had a large pit dug for burying 80 bodies, victims of Israeli bombardments on the hospital or patients and children who died due to the siege. Around 100 other bodies were still awaiting burial.
Despite the health director’s attempts to convince the Israeli caller that the hospital, as a medical institution, should not be invaded, the officer inquired about Dr. Al-Barsh’s location within the hospital and issued a veiled threat. Unfazed, Dr. Al-Barsh stated he was among the patients and prepared for any eventuality.
The health director emphasized to the Israeli officer the importance of not harming the patients and displaced civilians crowding every part of the hospital, including the operating rooms, following the Israeli bombardment of their homes and the continued aggression in the sector.
Al-Shifa Medical Complex, founded in 1946 and evolved into Gaza’s most significant health institution, houses three specialized hospitals and employs 25% of the health sector workforce in Gaza. Currently, it accommodates thousands of patients and displaced individuals seeking refuge.
