Algeria’s New Traffic Law: Stricter Measures for Road Safety

Algiers – A new traffic law is progressing through Algeria’s parliament, introducing a series of measures designed to reduce road accidents and promote a culture of safety and shared responsibility. The National Road Safety Delegation has confirmed that the proposed law, still under review, is a direct response to the alarming rise in traffic accidents and related fatalities.

The legislation adopts a comprehensive approach, moving beyond short-term solutions towards a sustainable preventative strategy. It emphasizes the legal responsibility of all parties involved in ensuring road safety.

According to Fatima Khellaf, the Delegation’s Communications Officer, the new law seeks to combat reckless behavior that endangers drivers and pedestrians alike. This will be achieved through a clearer definition of responsibilities and a reinforced commitment to traffic regulations, ultimately improving road safety for everyone.

The proposed law aims to broaden the scope of responsibility to include driving schools, driving test inspectors, traffic police, road maintenance personnel, and regulatory bodies. This comprehensive approach seeks to address all potential contributing factors to accidents.

Furthermore, the law mandates strict technical standards for vehicles and procedural measures to guarantee the safety of their users. It also requires the continuous improvement and regular maintenance of infrastructure. Support will be provided to regulatory agencies through modern digital equipment.

The amended traffic law includes deterrent measures with a preventative focus. These measures aim to incentivize compliance with traffic safety regulations and foster a spirit of positive competition in this area. This includes establishing a Presidential Prize for Road Safety, reinforcing a culture that protects lives and property.

The proposed law is expected to represent a significant shift in Algeria’s road safety system, upon ratification. It aims to create safer roads for all Algerians.
