Algeria Launches Major Highway Maintenance Program for 2026

Algiers – The Algerian government has announced the launch of a significant nationwide program aimed at maintaining and upgrading the country’s extensive highway network. The initiative, slated to continue through 2026, underscores the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and ensuring safe and efficient transportation across the nation.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, Abdelkader Djellaoui, during a working meeting dedicated to reviewing the sector’s 2026 action plan. The meeting also focused on evaluating the progress of ongoing infrastructure projects, preparing for the launch of new ventures, and monitoring the activities of inspection committees. Discussions also included digitalization efforts, cooperation initiatives, and research and training programs.

Minister Djellaoui emphasized the need for simultaneous project launches across all Algerian provinces. He also highlighted the importance of developing a specific plan for monitoring major projects and establishing performance-based contracts with public works directors. Their performance will be assessed against precise and defined key performance indicators.

A key focus of the program will be the comprehensive maintenance of Algeria’s highways. The initial phase of this major operation will commence with the Second Algiers Avoidance Road, before gradually extending to other national routes, particularly strategic roads connecting the north and south of the country.

The Minister also stressed the urgency of accelerating project implementation in Algiers, intensifying field monitoring by central and decentralized structures to guarantee timely delivery. He further emphasized the meticulous monitoring of projects within the supplementary program for the provinces of Djelfa, Khenchela, and Tissemsilt, with detailed progress reports required.

This ambitious program reflects Algeria’s dedication to modernizing its infrastructure and fostering economic growth through improved connectivity and transportation efficiency.
