A purported intelligence operation by Ukraine has ignited a firestorm online after the reported assassination of a prominent critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin was revealed to be a hoax. The incident has reportedly embarrassed Moscow and sparked debate about the competence of its security services, as well as Kyiv’s tactics in the ongoing shadow war.
At the center of the controversy is Denis Kapustin, labeled by Russia as one of Putin’s most dangerous opponents. Kapustin is the founder and commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps, a group fighting alongside Ukrainian forces since 2022. He has allegedly conducted attacks inside strategically important Russian regions, including Belgorod, making him a high-value target for Moscow. The Russian government had reportedly sentenced him to life imprisonment and offered a $500,000 bounty for his elimination.
In late December, Kapustin’s corps announced his death, claiming he had been “heroically assassinated” on the Zaporizhzhia front, vowing revenge. Ukrainian intelligence purportedly supported the claim with a video depicting a suicide drone striking a vehicle he was allegedly traveling in. Another video allegedly showed the vehicle engulfed in flames. The news spread rapidly through Russian media, Ukrainian websites, and social media, with some Russian outlets celebrating what they considered an intelligence success.
However, just two days later, the narrative crumbled. Kapustin appeared alive in a new video, alongside a Ukrainian military intelligence officer and the commander of the “Timur” unit he fights with. A picture of Ukrainian intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov was also displayed. Subsequently, Ukrainian intelligence reposted the original “assassination” video, titled “A Half-Million Dollar Video,” referencing the Russian bounty. They asserted that the operation was an elaborate ruse designed to expose a network plotting Kapustin’s assassination and convince Moscow that he was dead.
The incident has exposed the multifaceted layers of the conflict and the information war being waged alongside military operations. The long-term ramifications of this alleged deception remain to be seen.
